Without a Prescription
Calcium is a drug with the active ingredient called calcium polystyrene sulphonate, which acts as an ion exchange resin. Calcium binds with potassium in the gut that forms a complex that cannot be absorbed.
Calcium is prescribed for patients with very high level of potassium in the blood stream or what is called hyperkalemia.
Calcium is recommended in situations where the blood level of potassium is too high, such as in patients with severe kidney failure who are undergoing dialysis.
Contraindications
Calcium must be prescribed in caution with:

Calcium is not to be prescribed in the following:
- A form of cancer of the bone marrow;
- A form of cancer that has spread from its original site to somewhere else in the body;
- Babies less than one month old;
- Blockage of the bowel;
- Known sensitivity to any of its ingredients;
- Over activity of the parathyroid gland;
- Sarcoidosis;
If you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients, Calcium should not be taken. If you have previously experienced such an allergy immediately inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Stop using Calcium and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you feel you have experienced such an allergic reaction.
Intake Guidelines
Calcium can be administered to patients either through the mouth or as an enema. Before taking Calcium, dissolve or mix Calcium with water.
Dosage
Calcium should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor or as directed on the package. Ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you if you do not understand these directions.
Overdose
No overdose has been reported or associated with Calcium. Seek medical advice if you suspect any overdose.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose as instructed.
Side Effects
Individual people may be affected by medicines in different ways or may have different side effects. The following are some of the side effects of Calcium that are known:
- Constipation;
- Diarrhea;
- Gastric discomfort;
- Gastric disturbances;
- High blood calcium level or hypercalcaemia;
- High blood sodium level or hypernatraemia;
- Indigestion or dyspepsia;
- Loss of appetite;
- Low blood potassium level or hypokalemia;
- Nausea;
- Retention of sodium;
- Vomiting;

Interactions
Before taking Calcium, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Aluminum carbonate;
- Aluminum hydroxide or antacid;
- Magnesium hydroxide;
Calcium taken together with aluminum hydroxide might result to slight risk of intestinal obstruction.
Magnesium hydroxide and aluminum carbonate concurrently taken with Calcium might ensue to a risk of the blood becoming alkaline.
